What's going on with Black Women's Maternal Health?
As we celebrate the upcoming arrival of our precious little one, we are also mindful of the maternal health crisis affecting Black women in the USA. The statistics are sobering:
Black women are three to four times more likely to experience pregnancy-related deaths compared to white women.
Black women are more likely to experience preventable maternal death compared with white women
Black women’s heightened risk of pregnancy-related death spans income and education levels
Disparities in healthcare access and the impact of systemic racism contribute to these alarming statistics.
Why is my advocacy important?
We believe that every birthing person deserves the best possible care, and are committed to raising awareness about this issue.
Your support and advocacy can help make a positive change in the lives of Black birthers, their partnners, and their babies.
Let's work together to ensure a safer and healthier future for all.
What can I do to drive change in Black Women’s Maternal Helath?
Vote, it takes one second, for the team to receive a $25,000 grant to build a birth center HERE. Led by Myla Flores, The Birthing Place is well on its way in a journey to open an innovative community focused birthing center in the Bronx that will be BIPOC doula and midwife led. Their ultimate goal is to create a maternity system that centers the marginalized. #WeDeserveBirthCenters
Follow the work that Fund II Foundation is leading in the Black Maternal Health Equity via their website or socials. They’re taking a community approach and convening cross-sector leaders to advance equity at the individual, community, and systems levels to accelerate and sustain healthy Black births. #ForTheLoveOfBlackMothers
Learn more about, download, and write a review on the Irth App. Irth (as in Birth, but we dropped the B for bias), was founded by Kimberly Seals Allers, after experiencing bias while birthing her first child. Irth empowers Black and Brown parents by sharing experiences at healthcare facilities, turning them into impactful data for change. We HIGHLY recommend checking out the documentary on her work. #IrthApp
